Introducing Rachel

As the new semester begins we will be introducing our 2017-2018 team through their favorite TED Talks. Next up is Rachel, a Junior at Allendale Columbia School.

Everyone is different, from eye color to clothes from race to religion; no one is like you. We are all different and unique,  that is what makes us special. So many people are made fun of for being different which made them feel like they do not belong. But no one takes the time to celebrate their differences. I mean why would you? People feel pressure to be normal and to fit in, so why would they celebrate what is different about them?

This TED talk “What Makes You Special” by Mariana Atencio encourages people to celebrate their differences and assure them that being different is okay and good. When it comes to people, there is no definition of normal. We all have one thing in common, we are human. But each of us is different, and being different is an advantage. The second a child is born, each is unique and different. I sometimes find it hard to find the positives in being different but once you do it is the greatest feeling in the world. You not only feel comfortable in your own skin but you also feel accepted by yourself and others. I loved this TED talk because I could relate to it. It also reminded me that I am not the only one who doesn’t like being different and that I am not alone.

Sometimes it can be hard to find the positives in being different. It can be one of the hardest things we will ever do, but once we own our differences it can also be one of the most beautiful things in life. It is okay to be different; embrace it, celebrate it, shout it from the rooftops and take a stand to show the world what is different about you.
